Modena Week-End:logo An unusual habitat

The Castle of Montegibbio stands in a panoramic position 400 metres above sea level, overlooking the Secchia valley not far from Sassuolo. The surrounding area of about 30 hectares contains acclimatised trees which have managed to survive in the difficult alkaline soil. The main species are common and Turkey oak (in the driest ground) and hornbeam and hazelnut (on the north facing slopes where the soil is deeper and cooler). Historic oaks over three hundred years old are found close to the castle itself.
