Modena Week-End:logo The church of San Giorgio

The church of San Giorgio, constructed by the architect G. Vigarani in the mid XVII Century in the form of a Greek cross with a central dome and four oval windows, stands in a zone firmly dominated by the Este family, opposite the Palazzo Ducale. In the small, intimate interior, a women's gallery runs across the columns which mark the transition from one arm of the cross to the next and extends into the organ gallery over the main door. The more recent facade (1680) designed by A. Loraghi, is in typically Baroque style, with a curved pediment, marble pinnacles and an interrupted tympanum over the door. The overall impression of the facade is very lively, with clever use of the contrast between white marble and red brick covered with a thin plaster.
