Here again, Modena is second only to Bologna in its region, thanks to a well established tradition - the Zanichelli, Formiggini and Guanda publishing houses, now based in Bologna, Rome and Parma respectively, were all founded here. Today there are several publishers with a large output of quality books (Artioli, Mucchi and Franco Cosimo Panini) and others who publish fewer titles (A.G.E.R., Il Bulino, Elis Colombini, Della Casa, Il Fiorino, Guiglia, Mundici and Zanetti). A number of important local cultural bodies publish books on local history and culture, including the Deputazione di Storia Patria per le Antiche Province Modenesi (local history in general), the Istituto Storico della Resistenza e di Storio Contemporanea in Modena e Provincia (the history of the Resistance and contemporary history), and the Gruppo Archeologico della Bassa Modenese (the archaeology of the Po Plain). The City and Provincial Councils, and the Councils of neighbouring municipalities, publish volumes on the artistic heritage and natural history, and the three local banks also publish books about Modena's art and cultural life.
